Before we dive into the blessings found in Ephesians, it’s important to understand the background of this book. The letter was written by Paul while he was imprisoned in Rome, and it is believed to have been written around 60-62 AD.
Historical Context
Ephesus was a prominent city in Asia Minor, known for its temple to the goddess Artemis. The city was a significant center of trade and religion during Paul’s time, which provided both opportunities and challenges for the early Christian church.
The Church in Ephesus
The church in Ephesus was founded by Paul during his third missionary journey. He spent three years with the Ephesian believers, longer than any other church he worked with. This close relationship is reflected in the depth and warmth of his letter.
Paul’s Purpose
The purpose of this letter was to strengthen and encourage the church, while also addressing various issues and heresies that had arisen. Paul wanted to remind the Ephesians of their identity in Christ and the implications of living as the people of God.
Addressing Heresies
False teachings had begun to infiltrate the church, and Paul’s letter served as a corrective tool, providing doctrinal clarity and encouraging the believers to remain steadfast in the truth of the gospel.
The Blessings in Ephesians
The book of Ephesians is filled with blessings and promises from God. In fact, some scholars have counted 54 spiritual blessings in this letter alone. Let’s explore some of the most notable ones.
Chosen by God and Joined to Christ (Ephesians 1:4)
One of the first blessings mentioned in Ephesians is the fact that we have been chosen by God. We can see this powerfully in Ephesians 1:4 (TPT, 2018) which says:
4 And he chose us to be his very own, joining us to himself even before he laid the
foundation of the universe! Because of his great love, he ordained us, so that we would
be seen as holy in his eyes with an unstained innocence.
This means that before the foundation of the world, God had already chosen us to be his own. 2 Thessalonians 2:13 (TPT) reiterates God’s choice for you:
13 We always have to thank God for you, brothers and sisters, for you are dearly loved by the Lord. He proved it by choosing you from the beginning for salvation through the Spirit, who set you apart for holiness, and through your belief in the truth.
Not only were we chosen by God before the foundation of the world, but we were joined to Christ as well! Ephesians 1:4 above makes this very clear. 2 Timothy 1:9 (TPT): echoes this:
9 He gave us resurrection life and drew us to himself by his holy calling on our lives. And it wasn’t because of any good we have done, but by his divine pleasure and marvelous grace that confirmed our union with the anointed Jesus, even before time began!
God so valued us, He chose us and secured us by joining us to Himself before we were born into the material realm. This was so we could wake up to His choice for us and our union with Him, so that we could experience all that is available to children of God!
This is also a reminder that our salvation is not based on our own efforts or merit, but solely on God’s grace and love for us. So amazing!
Predestined for Adoption
Not only were we chosen by God and joined to Christ, but we were also predestined for adoption as sons and daughters through Jesus Christ. Ephesians 1:5 says:
5For it was always in his perfect plan to adopt us as his delightful children, through
our union with Jesus, the Anointed One, so that his tremendous love that cascades over
us would glorify his grace…
Note this adoption, like everything we receive through Christ, is through our union with Christ that He established. This adoption into God’s family is a profound aspect of our identity as believers and a source of immense comfort and security.
Loved and Accepted
God is Love and is utterly smitten with His kids and accepts us right where we are. The fact that we were chosen by God implies that we are loved and accepted by Him. In a world where love and acceptance is often conditional, the unconditional love of God and endless grace is revolutionary!
Purpose and Destiny
Being chosen by God means that we have a purpose and destiny that we can connect with. We are not accidents or afterthoughts; Ephesians 2:10 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition says:
10 For we are God’s [own] handiwork (His workmanship), [a]recreated in Christ Jesus, [born anew] that we may do those good works which God predestined (planned beforehand) for us [taking paths which He prepared ahead of time], that we should walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us to live].
(emphasis added)
We are predestined to be conformed into the image of Christ (Rom. 8:29-30, 2 Cor. 3:18, Phil. 3:21). As we are unveiled as sons and daughters, we can walk out the purposes that God crafted for us and crafted us for. We were crafted with a purpose in mind and our purpose was crafted for us. Our purpose simply “fits” as we discover it.
Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins (Ephesians 1:7)
Paul also mentions the redemption and forgiveness of sins as a blessing in Ephesians. Through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, all humanity has been redeemed (bought back from sin/death/the power of the enemy). We were also forgiven of all our all sins for all time: false identities, and the ways that manifests in fallen behavior. This allows us to be restored back to an intimate relationship with God, Who has never separated from us and Whose heart has ALWAYS been for us. From this intimacy all grace and blessing flow!
This is a powerful reminder of the ultimate price that was paid for our salvation, releasing us from the grip of sin and all the ways this brings death into our lives.
The Riches of His Grace
This redemption is described as being according to the riches of God’s grace, which He lavished on us. It emphasizes the generosity of God’s forgiveness, favor, empowerment, promises, wisdom, revelation, guidance, protection, provision…not given sparingly but super-abundantly. Indeed:
32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
(Romans, 8:32, KJV, emphasis added)
Freedom from Sin’s Penalty
The forgiveness we receive through Christ liberates us from the penalty of sin, which is death. This freedom allows us to live a life that is not dominated by the fear of death, but by the joy of salvation and knowing God more and more intimately, which is eternal life (Heb. 12:15, John 17:3). Moreover, the work of salvation didn’t just cover sin, but obliterated it, hence ultimately destroying the entity of death. This is a right now reality that, as we track with it and our new nature, sin and its lethal effects slips off us because it no longer fits us!
A New Identity
In Christ, we receive a new identity, actually connecting with our new nature as Christ in this world (2 Cor. 5:17, 1 John 4:17). This happened on the cross when, for humanity as humanity, Christ was baptized into death and resurrected unto life (Rom. 6:3). As we awaken to this truth we experience salvation (healing of our minds, wills, emotions, personalities, bodies, all the things that were impacted by the fall). This is an objective truth that is experienced subjectively to a deeper and deeper extent from glory to glory!
Our new creation self is in line with our original design without spot or blemish before God in Love (Eph. 1:4). We are no longer defined by our past mistakes, failures, or false personas, but are seen as we truly are: righteous and holy as Christ is in the sight of God because of Jesus’ (in concert with the rest of the Trinity) work (2 Cor. 5:21, 1 John 4:17).
Sealed with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13)
In Ephesians 1:13, Paul talks about how we have been sealed with the Holy Spirit. This means that the Holy Spirit has been given to us as a guarantee of our inheritance in Christ. The Holy Spirit is our Helper, Comforter, and Guide, and having the Holy Spirit living within us is literally our life!
The Guarantee of Our Inheritance
The sealing of the Holy Spirit is a down payment of what is to come. It assures us of our future inheritance and the fullness of life that we get to experience now and to a greater and greater degree for all eternity with God!
The Holy Spirit as Helper
The Holy Spirit plays an active role in our lives by teaching us, reminding us of Jesus’ words, and guiding us into all truth. Our Divine Helper, is intrinsic to direct and empower our spiritual growth and understanding. Jesus said:
16 And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby), that He may remain with you forever—
26 But the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, Whom the Father will send in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf], He will teach you all things. And He will cause you to recall (will remind you of, bring to your remembrance) everything I have told you.
(John 14:16, 26 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition, emphasis added)
He/She leads us and guides us into all Truth (John 16:13, Rom. 8:14) – which results in freedom (John 8:32).
The Transformative Power of the Spirit
The presence of the Holy Spirit within us is not only a promise for the future but also a transformative power in the present (Phil. 2:13). Holy Spirit works to conform us to the image of Christ:
18 And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
(2 Corinthians 3:18, NIV, emphasis added)
He/She produces fruit in our lives that reflect Trinity’s character (Gal. 5:22-23).
Access to the Father (Ephesians 2:18)
Another blessing mentioned in Ephesians is our access to the Father through Christ. Through Jesus’ sacrifice, we now have direct access to God, and we can approach Him with confidence and boldness as dear beloved children – Abba Father (Rom. 8:15-17, Heb. 4:16)! This is a joyful privilege that should not be taken for granted.
Confidence in Prayer
Because of this access, we can have confidence in our prayer life, knowing that we are heard by God. We can bring our requests, thanksgivings, and concerns before Him/Her, assured that He/She listens and responds.
A Personal Relationship with God
This access also signifies a personal relationship with the Creator of the universe. It’s not a distant or formal relationship but one that is intimate and constant, much like the relationship between a parent and child/Husband and bride/intimate friend! This is us smack dab in the center of Love: Father, Son & Spirit – adored and fully embraced!
The Mediatorial Role of Christ
Jesus Christ serves as our mediator, bridging the gap between humanity and God. His role ensures that we can approach God without fear of condemnation or rejection (Rom. 8:1, Heb. 4:16).
Unity in the Body of Christ (Ephesians 4:3)
Paul also mentions the blessing of unity in the body of Christ in Ephesians. As believers, we are all part of one body, and we are called to live in unity and love with one another. This is a beautiful blessing that allows us to support and encourage one another as we journey through life together.
Diversity within Unity
While calling for unity, Paul also acknowledges the diversity within the body of Christ. We each have unique gifts and roles, but these differences are meant to complement, not divide, as we work together for the common good.
The Bond of Peace
Unity is held together by the bond of peace, which requires humility, gentleness, patience, and bearing with one another in love. These virtues are essential for maintaining harmony within the church (Eph. 4:2-3).
Building Each Other Up
The unity of the body of Christ is not just for our own benefit but also for the purpose of building each other up in love. As we each function in our gifts, the whole body is edified and grows into maturity.
The Armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-17)
In the final chapter of Ephesians, Paul talks about the armor of God. He reminds us that as believers, we are often in a spiritual battle. We must put on the full armor of God to stand against the enemy however you define him/it. This armor includes the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit. This blessing reminds us that we have everything we need to stand strong in our faith.
The Belt of Truth
The belt of truth represents integrity and honesty, which are foundational to our spiritual life. Truth keeps us from being deceived by the enemy and helps us stand firm in our faith.
The Breastplate of Righteousness
Righteousness protects our hearts from the accusations and guilt that satan throws at us. It is not our own righteousness, but that which is imparted to us through Christ, that guards our emotions and thoughts.
The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace
Being ready with the gospel of peace means we are prepared to share the good news
with others and to stand firm against discord and strife. This peace also stabilizes us in
tumultuous times.
The Shield of Faith
Faith acts as a shield, extinguishing the fiery darts of the wicked one. These darts may
be doubts, fears, or lies, but faith in God’s promises and character can repel them all.
The Helmet of Salvation
Our salvation is a helmet that protects our minds. It gives us assurance and hope, keeping our thoughts focused on the victory we have in Christ.
The Sword of the Spirit
The Word of God is our offensive weapon in the spiritual battle. It is living and active, able to discern thoughts and intentions, and it equips us to counter the enemy’s lies.
