How to Find Peace in the Midst of A Storm

Peace is found in a Person. This Person is the Jesus, the Christ, the Prince of Peace.

Peace from the Prince of Peace

Isaiah 9:6-7 (NASB) says:

6 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us;

And the government will rest on His shoulders;

And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

7 There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace,

On the throne of David and over his kingdom,

To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness

From then on and forevermore.

The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this.

Notice the government of peace and its Lord is right in the context, not the absence of walking in darkness, oppression, and battle.

2 The people who walk in darkness

Will see a great light;

Those who live in a dark land,

The light will shine on them.

3 You shall multiply the nation,

You shall increase their gladness;

They will be glad in Your presence

As with the gladness of harvest,

As men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

4 For You shall break the yoke of their burden and the staff on their shoulders,

The rod of their oppressor, as at the battle of Midian.

5 For every boot of the booted warrior in the battle tumult,

And cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire.

Peace is Found in the Midst of the Storm

Jesus, Who is the light of the world and the light of men, shines right in the place of darkness. John 1 (NASB) says:

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. 5 The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

He is the One, Who releases peace in the midst of the storm. Scripture says:

36 So leaving the crowd, they took Him with them, just as He was, in the boat. And other boats were with Him.37 And a fierce windstorm began to blow, and waves were breaking over the boat, so that it was already being swamped.

38 But Jesus was in the stern, asleep [with His head] on the [sailor’s leather] cushion. And they woke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are about to die?” 39 And He got up and [sternly] rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Hush, be still (muzzled)!” And the wind died down [as if it had grown weary] and there was [at once] a great calm [a perfect peacefulness]. 40 Jesus said to them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith and confidence [in Me]?”Mark 4:38-40 (AMP)

Fear Has a Voice, Peace Has a Voice

Notice that Jesus said, “Hush be still (muzzled)” Apparently in the midst of this life and death struggle, there were threatening loud voices that needed to be silenced. As Christ commanded peace to the wind, this translation brings out the idea that the wind, His own creation, was itself exhausted in the chaos. Truly creation groans to be released from its bondage. This happens as the sons and daughter are manifested or unveiled. (Romans 8:19-21).

The one question Jesus asked His panicked disciples about was their fear.  They had lost connection (faith) with the One Who casts out fear – the one Who is Love.

Finding Peace

Peace comes from the place of knowing Who Christ is. He is the Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6) He is the One Who is Love and perfect love casts out fear. (1 John 4:16-18)

2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. -2 Peter 1:2 (NASB)

Knowledge here is the Greek term, epignōsis, recognition, acknowledgement, and full discernment and keeping that knowledge of the one true God which has illumined the soul.

Keeping Peace

You can take your place of peace by fixing your eyes on Jesus instead of the wind and the waves.

Hebrews 12:1-2 (NASB) tells us the way to overcome encumbrances is to fix our eyes on Jesus. As we do, so we grow in the knowledge of Him.  Peace comes from the place of knowing Who Christ is. He is the Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6) He is the One Who is Love and perfect love casts out fear.

What you focus on is where your mind goes. Where your mind goes is what you experience.

3 “You will keep in perfect and constant peace the one whose mind is steadfast [that is, committed and focused on You—in both inclination and character],

Because he trusts and takes refuge in You [with hope and confident expectation]. -Isaiah 26:3 (AMP)

Peace allows you to rest.

You can rest and be at peace because the Prince of Peace is Love and Love never fails. (1 Corinthians 13:8)

  1. The first words Jesus spoke to His disciples after His Resurrection was “Shalom” or “Peace with you”. Jesus was not just having a conversation, He was making a statement of fact. The very air in the room changed when He said it. Peace is so easy to say, but sometimes hard to experience. I know that the word “Shalom” is a verb for me and not a noun. Peace definitely removes chaos, fear, and anarchy from my life because as you have said the person of Jesus replaces fear, chaos, and anarchy with calm and tranquility. Peace from God removes chaos and calm and tranquility comes. My favorite scriptures are Philippians 4:6, 7; Luke 1:79; John 14:27; Matthew 10:13. I did notice that peace is ascribed to our feet when we walk. Sounds like the Peace from God in the person of Jesus can be contagious as we walk on the earth. Everywhere we go we bring the peace of Jesus. Yes, we have Peace with God and now we walk with the peace that comes from God. Fear, chaos, anarchy, and anxiety leave in the blessed name of Jesus. Amen!
