I recently had a discussion with someone very dear to me about what is most important. She asserted that Truth is most important. I believe she is right because Jesus said He is the Way, the Truth, and the life. (John 14:6) Truth that we know sets us free (John 8:32) and is the hallmark of the presence of Holy Spirit (2 Corinthians 3:17).
But the word also says in multiple places that God is Love. (1 John 4:8, 1 John 4:16)
Love is actually a Person. God is Love. Love is His primary nature and motivation. Everything He has done—His limitless grace, forgiveness, His healing/saving/delivering—flows from Who He is.
God Is Truth, God is Love
He is Truth that frees because He is Love.
He’s relentless in drawing all things to Himself and restoring all things – especially His kids!
And Love never fails.
The word says that faith, hope and love remain but the greatest of these is love. (1 Corinthians 13:13) Truth is not even mentioned in this list.
Ephesians 4:15-16 says not to be tossed around with every wind of doctrine:
15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work. (NASB)
Here is a Truth-Love connection for you: Truth basks in Love, because both are the same Person!
Asking which one is more important is asking the wrong question. They are essences of the same Person and cannot compete or violate one another as God is integrous (full of integrity) within Himself.
But, are we known for our truth and commanded to champion truth?
No, we are to be known for our love for one another (John 13:35) and commanded to Love (John 13:34, 2 John 1:5…) which always points to THE Truth of Christ and His finished work that sums up ALL truth.
