The Family You’ve Always Belonged To
Have you ever felt like the odd one out? Like maybe—just maybe—you’re too messy, too broken, too complicated to belong in the “family of God”?
I get it. But, let me help you with the truth: There are no black sheep in God’s family. Only beloved ones.
Yes, even you. Even them. Even the ones you’d least expect. Even they are God’s children.
We live in a world obsessed with merit—what you’ve earned, what you’ve failed at, what you’ve proven. And sadly, that same mindset has crept into our spirituality. We start to believe that closeness with God is only for a chosen few and has to be deserved, that we have to clean ourselves up, find the right theology, or “get it together” before we can belong.
But God’s heart says otherwise.
In Acts 17:28, Paul stands before a crowd of philosophers in Athens—people who didn’t know the God of Israel and were steeped in pagan worldviews—and he quotes two of their own poets:
“In Him we live and move and have our being.” — Epimenides
“We are also His offspring.” — Aratus
Paul uses those lines as bridges—stepping stones that connect Greek philosophical insight with the deeper reality of the one true God. Even their own poets, unknowingly, had tapped into a fragment of truth:
We ALL come from God. We are His. Whether we recognize Him yet or not.
In other words, our origin is in God. We are God’s offspring—not because we prayed the right prayer, but because we were crafted from Love Himself. We bear His image. We move in His breath. We live in His being.
That’s not something we earned—it’s something we were born of Him with. Like it or not, believe it or not, you’re His, and there is nothing you can do or not do to change that. You are simply not powerful enough to “un-child” yourself!
So why don’t we always feel like His children?
Because, while our origin is secure, our experience of sonship often needs healing.
Are We All God’s Children? Understanding Our Origin in God
Are we all children of God? Yes.
Theologians often debate whether everyone is a child of God, or only those who are “saved.” But it’s not an either/or question—it’s a matter of both, it’s nature and nurture.
By nature, we are all God’s children. We come from Him, made in His image and likeness (Genesis 1:27). That’s not just spiritual poetry—it’s divine reality.
By nurture, we grow into that identity through Christ, learning to receive and live from it. That is us subjectively experiencing more and more what is objectively eternally irrevocably true.
The Greek word Paul uses in Acts 17 for “offspring” is genos—it means kin, family, kindred. Whether we acknowledge it or not, we belong to God because He created us out of Himself. We carry His DNA. There is no other source/Divine Parent. Satan has no offspring as he cannot create. He can only warp/mar/pervert what has been created. But even if we are acting like the children of Satan (John 8:44), who we are is still true—offspring of God. We just do not know it!
But like any parent-child relationship, intimacy and growth require engagement. God will never disown us—but we often don’t know how to receive our sonship (Heb. 13:5). Even when scripture says God may tell some, depart I never knew you, He is NOT referring to the true self but to the false identities we are operating in (Matt. 7:23). Moreover, God will always challenge any pigpen thinking that we’re servants, not sons (Luke 15:18-31).
That’s why Galatians 4:6–7 reminds us:
“Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, ‘Abba, Father!’ Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.” – Galatians 4:6–7 (NKJV)
This is the nurture piece—our hearts learning to cry out “Abba,” not because we just gained a Father, but because we’re finally realizing we’ve always had one.

There Are No Black Sheep in God’s Family
There is no part of you—no flaw, no mistake, no history—that has the power to exile you from Love. You can’t earn your way into this family, and you can’t sin your way out. Because it’s not based on your performance. It’s based on your origin.
And God doesn’t make illegitimate children.
The parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11–24) isn’t just a beautiful story—it’s a revelation of God’s parenting style. The son, after squandering everything, comes home rehearsing his speech: “I’m not worthy… make me a servant…”
But the father isn’t interested in penance. He runs. He embraces. He puts a ring on the boy’s finger and throws a feast.
Why?
Because the son’s identity was never revoked. Even in rebellion, he was still a son. Moreover, he challenged the elder brother who thought his father was holding out on him: “Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours” (Luke 15:31).
And this isn’t limited to one kind of person or one level of behavior. It’s for all. Because Love doesn’t play favorites. Love casts out fear. And Love never calls anyone “less than.”
Growing Into Sonship: Nature + Nurture in Christ
If being born of God is nature… then walking in relationship with Him is nurture.
This is where Christ enters the story—not just to “get us saved,” but to bring us back into the experience of family. Jesus didn’t come to start a religion. He came to reveal the Father—and to show us what it means to be a son or daughter in whom God is well pleased.
Paul declares in Romans:
“For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, ‘Abba, Father.’ The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God…” – Romans 8:15-16 (NKJV)
You are God’s child by origin; your origin is what is referred to as your ontology. And through Christ, you learn how to live that out—how to rest in the Father’s love, how to respond to His voice, how to mature into your full inheritance.
There’s no striving in sonship. There’s no fear of rejection. There’s just the ongoing invitation to grow, to be nurtured, and to be loved into maturity.
Your nature is secure. Your nurture is in progress and is empowered by Holy Spirit in us Who is masterful at His job. And Papa/Jesus/Holy Spirit is faithful in both.

Come to the Table
Beloved, you don’t have to keep striving to belong. You already do, , and Holy Spirit relentlessly is present to wake you up to that eternal Truth.
You’ve always belonged—not because of what you’ve done or haven’t done, but because of Who made you. You were formed in Love, claimed by Love, and are destined to grow in Love’s image.
There are no exceptions in God’s family. No outcasts. No “black sheep.” Just beloved sons and daughters who may not yet know how fully they are wanted.
God’s table isn’t for the perfect—it’s for the hungry. So come. Come with your questions. Come with your mess. Come with your dreams, your doubts, your weariness. The seat has already been set. The invitation was already sent.
“See what great love the Father has given us, that we should be called God’s children—and we are!” – 1 John 3:1 (CSB)
“You are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with the saints, and members of God’s household.” – Ephesians 2:19 (CSB)
He’s not just inviting you into Heaven someday. He’s inviting you to experience family now. And He’s not asking you to clean yourself up to get there. He’s asking you to receive what’s already true:
You are chosen.
You are seen.
You are nurtured by a God Who adores you.
You are welcomed, accepted, and celebrated.
You don’t need to earn your way into this family.
You just need to take your seat.
Love, Catherine Toon
