We all want financial security. We want to know the bills will be paid, the future will be okay, and we will not be swallowed up by uncertainty. That desire is understandable, but here is the deeper truth: financial security by itself cannot heal the fear underneath our striving. Money can be a blessing. Money can be a tool. But money cannot carry the weight of your soul.
The truth is, many of us are not really chasing wealth – we are chasing relief.
We are chasing the feeling that we will finally be okay. We are chasing the end of pressure, the end of money anxiety, the end of wondering whether we will have enough. But if our peace is rooted only in numbers, then even when numbers rise, fear often finds another way to speak. That is because what we need most is not merely external provision. We need inner anchoring. We need security in Christ. If we are not secure in Someone bigger than ourselves then there is no amount of money that will make us feel secure.
That does not make practical needs unimportant. It just means they are not ultimate.
In this week’s Perspectives with Catherine Toon conversation with Tehilla Luttig, we explored a tender and liberating truth: no amount of money can give you what only knowing God has you can give. That does not make provision less precious. It makes God’s heart more beautiful.
Financial Security Is Not The Same As Inner Safety
There is nothing wrong with desiring financial security. There is nothing wrong with good stewardship, healthy planning, wise saving, or building responsibly. Papa is not anti-money. He is not anti-abundance. He is not nervous about blessing.
But financial security is not the same thing as inner safety.
A number in your bank account cannot tell your nervous system that you are safe. A full savings account cannot heal childhood fear. A raise cannot confer identity. More income cannot automatically silence shame. That is why people can have very little and be deeply at rest, while others can have much and still live in torment.
The issue is not the amount. The issue is often the altar.
When money becomes the place we look to for peace, identity, worth, or rescue, we have asked it to do what only Love can do.
Why Fear Makes Money Feel Bigger Than It Is
Fear magnifies everything.
If fear has been driving your heart, then money can begin to feel enormous. It can start to look like your protector, your provider, your permission to exhale. When that happens, lack feels catastrophic and increase feels like salvation. But beloved, that is too much pressure to put on provision.
Fear-driven living often sounds spiritual or responsible on the surface. It says:
– I just need to work harder.
– I just need more margin.
– I just need to figure this out.
– I just need to stop falling behind.
But underneath that can be a panicked vow: I will save myself.
That is exhausting.
This is where money anxiety begins to disciple the heart more than peace does. And once fear is driving, it trains you to scan for more lack. Even when provision comes, your mind may still brace for loss. Even when help arrives, your body may still prepare for collapse. That is why financial security alone cannot resolve financial fear.
Fear needs more than a number. Fear needs a Shepherd.

God’s Provision Is Not The Same As Idolatry
Let me bring some clarity and tenderness here.
To enjoy provision is not idolatry.
To thank God for abundance is not greed.
To desire enough with surplus is not carnality.
To steward money wisely is not unbelief.
The problem is not God’s provision. The problem is misplaced source.
Check out my earlier blog, God of Abundance: Enjoying Provision Without Idolatry, which pairs so beautifully with this conversation. God is abundant. He delights in supply. He is not withholding goodness from His children. But He also loves us too much to let us make money into a false refuge.
YAHWEH is my best friend and my shepherd. I always have more than enough. – Psalm 23:1, TPT
That is the language of God’s provision. Not panic. Not scarcity. Not striving for crumbs. Provision begins with a Person.
Jesus In The Storm Changes How We Define Financial Security
One of the most healing images in scripture is Jesus sleeping in the storm. The storm was real. The disciples were not weak for noticing it. The boat was taking on water. Their fear made sense. And still, Jesus rested.
That changes how we understand financial security.
Peace is not the absence of a storm. Peace is the Presence of the One greater than the storm.
So many of us think that if we just had enough money, enough clarity, enough backup plans, enough certainty, then we could finally rest. But Jesus reveals something deeper. Rest is not always what happens after the storm. Sometimes rest is what happens with Him in the middle of it.
That means your storm is not proof that God has forgotten you. Pressure is not proof that you are failing. Your questions are not proof that you lack faith. Sometimes they are simply the very place where Love wants to meet you most tenderly and work something transcendent inside.
If peace only exists once all pressure is gone, then peace will always stay out of reach, where idols promise peace which dissipates like a mirage, just out of reach. But if peace is found in Christ Himself, then even in the middle of not-okay things, you can be held. You are OK. You are secure and you can even be joyful, one with the One Who is full of joy!

Your Identity In Christ Is Deeper Than Your Bank Balance
If your identity has been bruised by lack, instability, comparison, or fear, then money can begin to feel like proof of whether you are okay. But your bank balance was never meant to define your being. Your income was never meant to narrate your worth. Your performance was never meant to confer value and significance.
Your truest reality is your identity in Christ.
For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. – Colossians 3:3, NKJV
Your life is hidden with Christ in God. Not exposed to random chaos. Not abandoned to the mercy of fluctuating numbers. Hidden with Christ in God.
That is security in Christ.
Beloved, you are not self-made. You are God-breathed.
When we forget that, we start trying to hold ourselves together with money, control, effort, image, and over-functioning. But you were never meant to be held together by money. You were always meant to be held by Love.
Financial Security Without Rest Still Feels Like Bondage
There are people with a lot of money who still cannot sleep because it’s not enough or they are terrified to lose it.
There are people with resources who still live in dread.
There are people with apparent financial security who still feel profoundly unsafe inside.
Why? Because rest does not come merely from accumulation. Rest comes from trust. Rest comes from security in Christ. Rest comes from being reintroduced to the heart of God as good, near, and faithful.
I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; For You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety. – Psalm 4:8, NKJV
Notice the Source of safety. Not money. Not control. Not perfect circumstances. You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.
That is why rest in God is not passivity. It is not denial. It is not irresponsibility. It is trust-filled alignment. It is refusing to let fear be your master. It is saying, “Holy Spirit, I will let You lead me, not fear..I put my trust in You.”

What Real Financial Security Feels Like In The Kingdom
Real financial security in the Kingdom is not pretending needs do not exist. It is not spiritualizing away budgets, bills, or responsibilities. It is not laziness dressed up as faith.
Real financial security looks like this:
– You can face facts without making them your lord.
– You can steward wisely without striving.
– You can receive God’s provision without worshiping it.
– You can live in lack or abundance and hold what you have loosely, because you are tightly held.
– You can take action without being driven by fear.
– You can breathe in the middle of uncertainty because your life is anchored in Someone deeper than circumstance.
That is where peace in uncertainty begins to grow.
And that peace changes how you hear God too. Instead of pounding the wrong puzzle piece into place, you begin to ask, “Papa, where does this piece go?” Instead of assuming that pressure equals clarity, you slow down enough to listen. Instead of trying to rescue yourself with frantic effort, you become available to grace.
That is not weakness. That is wisdom.
God’s Provision Flows From Relationship, Not Performance
One of the most beautiful truths in this conversation is that God’s provision flows from relationship, not performance.
That does not mean we never work. It does not mean we never plan. It does not mean we float through life disconnected from responsibility. It means we no longer let fear define the source.
We are not orphans trying to scrape together survival. We are beloved children learning how to live from union.
And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:19, NKJV
That is not a formula for control. It is a revelation of Source.
Beloved, God’s provision is not stingy. It is not late in the anxious way we imagine. It is not ashamed of your need. It is not frightened by your storm. It is not irritated by your humanity. His provision is infused with His presence, His kindness, and His wisdom.
A Gentle Practice When Money Anxiety Rises
When money anxiety starts to rise, try this:
Put your hand on your heart.
Take a gentle breath.
And say:
Papa/Jesus/Holy Spirit, You are my safety.
I renounce the lie that money is my savior.
Thank You for Your provision.
Teach me rest in You.
Show me how to walk in financial security without fear ruling me.
Anchor me in security in Christ.
Then sit there a moment.
Do not rush.
Let the truth land deeper than your thoughts. Let it touch your body. Let it minister to the places that learned to live on high alert. He heals step by step. He is not harsh with your process.
The Truest Financial Security Is Relational
Beloved, here is the bottom line: financial security matters, but it is not ultimate.
Money is a tool.
Provision is a gift.
Stewardship is wisdom.
But your peace, your identity, and your safety were never meant to rest in numbers.
The truest financial security is relational.
It is found in the Good Shepherd Who always has more than enough.
It is found in the Christ in Whom your life is hidden.
It is found in the Lord Who makes you dwell in safety.
It is found in the Father Who supplies all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
So yes, be wise.
Yes, plan.
Yes, steward.
Yes, receive abundance with gratitude.
But do not ask money to tell you who you are.
That is not its job.
You were never meant to be held together by money. You were always meant to be held by Love.
Love, Catherine Toon
Hi Cathy,
If only people would realize money is the answer to being fulfilled. It is a deep relationship with God that makes the ultimate impact in life. These days the resources I have is not only for paying my obligations, but to also help others who are in need. God rewards those who are generous in their giving. Acts 20:35 it is more blessed to give than receive. This is my favorite passage. Because we all need help from one another why not join the generous God who loves to freely give to us!
That is so true and so good!
