What’s Blocking God’s Blessing? (Hint: It’s Not God)

What's Blocking God's Blessing

When the Flow Feels Stuck

Have you ever found yourself praying for God’s blessing, doing “all the right things,” but still feeling like something isn’t flowing?

You know He’s good. You believe He provides. But deep down, you’re wondering: What’s wrong with me? Why does it feel like I’m stuck?

Here’s the thing: God is not holding out on you. He’s not waiting for you to get everything perfect before He pours out abundance. In fact, He’s already given you everything you need in Christ.

He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all—how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things? — Romans 8:32 (NIV, emphasis added)

So if the blessings are freely given… what’s blocking the flow?

Let’s go there.

God’s Heart Is Generous—It’s Who He Is

Many of us need a complete reset on how we see God.

He’s not a reluctant giver. He’s not a cosmic scorekeeper, waiting to see if we’ve earned our miracle. He is, and always has been, a radically generous Father. A Giver. A Blesser. A Redeemer. And the more we partake of His goodness, the more pleasure it gives Him!

It is His good pleasure to give you the Kingdom (Luke 12:32).

God’s abundance isn’t something we have to pry from His hands—it’s the overflow of Who He is.

But we can only receive what our hearts are open to. And sometimes, without realizing it, we shut the door on the very thing we’re asking for. Not because we’re bad or unworthy—but because we’re hurt, fearful, or believing something that isn’t true about Him… or about ourselves.

Common Blocks to God’s Abundance (and how to clear the way)

In my blog 11 Ways You’re Blocking Your Blessings,” I list subtle but powerful ways we resist what God is trying to give us. And most of them don’t look like rebellion—they look like self-protection.

Let’s highlight a few of the big ones:

Scarcity Mindset

This says, “There’s not enough for me.” It trains us to expect small, prepare for disappointment, and hoard instead of receive. But this isn’t how heaven works.

My God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus. — Philippians 4:19 (NIV)

Scarcity isn’t humility. It’s misalignment. It teaches us to beg from a table we’ve already been seated at.

Judgment, Jealousy, and Entitlement

Jesus said,

“Give, and it will be given to you… For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” — Luke 6:38 (NIV)

We often quote that about money, but Jesus was talking about judgment.

When we judge someone else’s blessing, or feel entitled to ours, we close our own hands. Judgment blocks the flow. Entitlement misrepresents the nature of grace. God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble (James 4:6, 1 Peter 5:5).

Fear of Disappointment

This one’s sneaky. Sometimes we don’t ask boldly because… what if God doesn’t come through?

But fear of disappointment keeps us from intimacy. God is not afraid of your vulnerability. He wants to be trusted, not just believed in. And He will empower us to grow in our trust and ability to rest in His goodness (Phil. 2:13).

Trying to Control the Timing

James 1:4 says, “Let patience have its perfect work…”

When we confuse delay with denial, we can fall into discouragement and distrust. But sometimes the wait is about aligning you with the weight of what’s coming. God’s delays are never dismissals.

What's Blocking God's Abundance

Receiving from God Begins with Intimacy

God isn’t just giving you stuff. He’s giving you Himself.

The blessings aren’t meant to function apart from your relationship with the Giver. They’re meant to flow through it. When we draw near to God—truly near—we start receiving more than we knew to ask for.

My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. — John 10:27 (NKJV)

In How to Hear from God, I wrote:

“God speaks and wants to be heard; and He has given you the inherent capacity to connect with Him more and more on an experiential level. That is so amazing!”

Receiving abundance starts with connection. Not with striving. Not with fixing. But with trust.

Postures That Unlock the Flow

Here are a few powerful shifts that re-open the doors of your heart to receive:

  • Humility – I don’t have to have it all together
  • Gratitude – Thank You for what You’ve already done
  • Trust – Even when I don’t see it yet
  • Generosity – I mirror heaven when I give freely

These aren’t works—they’re alignment. They are the ways we walk with the rhythm of heaven instead of against it.

Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over… — Luke 6:38 (NIV)

Receive from God

Final Encouragement: You’re Not Disqualified—You’re Being Invited

Friend, if you’ve felt blocked or discouraged, hear this:

You are not disqualified. You are not failing. You are being invited—into deeper trust, deeper intimacy, and deeper alignment with the God Who loves you more than life itself.

Maybe the block isn’t punishment. Maybe it’s an invitation to come closer.

Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. — Matthew 11:28 (NASB)

God is able to make all grace abound to you… — 2 Corinthians 9:8 (NASB)

What’s blocking God’s blessing?

It’s never His reluctance.

It’s only our readiness.

And the good news is: readiness starts with saying yes.

Call to Action: Let the Blessing Flow

Take a moment. Ask the Holy Spirit:

Where am I closing my heart out of fear, shame, or striving?

What am I believing about You, or about myself, that needs to shift?

What would it look like to open my hands today?

Prayer:

“Papa, I let go of striving. I release fear. I break agreement with judgment, shame, and smallness. I choose to align with Your goodness. I open my hands to receive—not because I earned it, but because You’re that good. Teach me to trust You, to walk with You, and to live in the overflow of Your heart. Amen.”

You were made for the flow of God’s abundance.

Not just financially—but spiritually, emotionally, relationally.

Let it flow.

Love, Catherine Toon
